Probiotics work with the human digestive system. They have been called a "second immune system." The bacteria is commonly used in the dairy industry to turn milk into yogurt. This is the primary reason that many foods containing these types of bacteria are dairy products. They may also come from some fruit juices.

Probiotic supplements have also been linked with other healthful benefits. Consumers have reported that they alleviated severe lactose intolerance. Other reports suggest that these products have actually lowered cholesterol in some individuals who have dealt with cholesterol issues.

The largest claim to support their health benefits revolves around the overall immune system. Some recent studies have shown that probiotics have lowered an individual's risk for kidney stones. They have also been used to fight common allergies, the yeast infection candida, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome.
