Serene Country Living in Cobbitty

By:

As you drive out to Cobbitty, you may as well be driving to another country, it is so far removed from the hurly burly of city life.

Cobbitty boasts serene country living, old-world churches, and an arts and crafts market that really needs to be visited at least once (but we know you'll go back over and over again!).

Cobbitty is located just over 60 kilometres from Sydney, and you can plan a relaxing weekend in a B&B, visit the markets, and stroll the quiet country streets all within an hour's drive, or fifteen minutes from Campbelltown. The Markets, held on the first Saturday in the month, boasts a wide range of food, arts, crafts and home-made goods. Get there early to grab the best of what's on offer, but rest assured that if you don't get there until later, what's left will be just as special. There are several more markets around Campbelltown and even nearby at Liverpool and Moorebank, if you are so inclined. Make a weekend of market shopping, and base yourself at Cobbitty for some peace among the business.

Sunday sees Menangle Market open, offering trash and treasure, so make sure you set aside a good half day to browse the stalls. Another market offering hidden gems amongst the rows is the Grand Bazaar at Prestons. A little further from Cobbitty, but worth the drive if you are looking for a good bargain.

Remember your Cobbitty weekend by stopping at the Cobbitty Garden Centre, and purchase a Cobbitty Daisy, developed by the University of Sydney (which has a campus at Cobbitty). The Cobbitty Daisy is a pretty flower, available in several colours. To attract butterflies, birds and bees, plant a few Cobbitty Daisies around your garden and watch the wildlife flock in.

The University of Sydney Cobbitty Campus teaches agriculture and veterinary sciences, and also has a veterinary hospital for sick pets and livestock. Pick up all your pet supplies and ask for advice for your furry loved ones.

Locals know all too well about the little gem that is the Cobbitty Winery. Run by the Cogno Brothers, the family who also own Middlebrook Winery in McLaren Vale in South Australia, the winery has a great range of different red and white table wines and sparkling wines, as well as fortifieds. Don't be put off by the exterior, most everything is done on the premises and it is purely a family business. It is definitely a must see, though, and must-try - just don't forget to taste in moderation, and keep Cogno's Cobbitty Winery a secret. We don't want it getting out!
