Solar How To: Constructing a Solar Water Heating Panel Part II

By: Sean Burton

Since a self-constructed solar water heating panel can last up to 20 years, the quality of the materials is vital to construction. Here you will learn the measurements of all materials needed and any additional secondary materials. While some of the materials may be pricey, they will pay for themselves many times over in the money you will save on your water heating bills.

The 10 mm annealed copper tubing will carry the water through the panel's collector area. Copper is a preferred metal for plumbing and water filtration systems. because it resists corrosion effectively and has a high thermal conductivity. The disadvantage of using copper tubing is solely based on price. Copper tubing is more expensive than other types of metals; however, it is more beneficial to this project.

The majority of homes feature copper tubing in their plumbing, which is one reason why it is recommended for this project. Using copper tubing in a home that already has copper plumbing reduces the risk of corrosion that mixed metal systems run. Copper tubing is also pliable, making it an easy metal to work with.

The aluminum sheeting will be used to construct the absorber plate. Use the matte black paint to blacken one side of the sheeting, allowing maximum energy absorption. 16 swg is the optimum density for the aluminum sheet. Aluminum sheeting that is lower in gauge can warp under intense heating conditions. If the aluminum sheet's gauge is higher than 16 swg, it could fail to properly transfer the light energy, making it inefficient.

Glass is the preferable material for the panel's transparent cover because it has a high light transmission value. Acrylic sheeting could be used in place of glass and is less expensive. However, glass does not scratch or discolor: two factors that affect the panel's efficiency. Glass is the most effective material in capturing light wave radiation, which is turned into energy.

Here's how you build a solar water heating panel that measures 1500 mm long by 900 mm wide by 80 mm deep: The wood for the frame should be 80mm by 50mm and be made of either cedar or teak. The aluminum sheet should measure 4 feet, 8 inches long by 2 feet, 8 inches high and 16swg. Use approximately one sheet of aluminum for each solar water heating panel. You will need 30 to 35 feet of annealed copper tubing per panel.

At least two cans of black spray primer and paint will be needed for each panel, as well wood glue for sealant. Cut the glass sheeting to fit the surface of the panel (1500 mm x 900 mm); it should be at least 32 ounces in weight. A lighter float glass would not be durable enough for this project. Aluminum foil will also be needed for the solar water heating panel construction.

The use of quality materials is essential to the construction of a durable solar water heating panel. Solar water heating panels will save a homeowner or renter money on home heating bills and also a renewable energy source. The construction of a solar water heating panel can be done over the course of a weekend and is a cost-effective do-it-yourself project for any homeowner.
