Things To See On Your Holidays In Cameroon

By: Andrew Gibson

Cameroon is one of the oldest countries in Africa. In fact it's claimed that there are a lot of cities that are branded as World Heritage Sites. It is a Central African nation and located on the gulf of Guinea, bordered by Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.

For tourists looking for the natural resources of Cameroon, then the Dja Faunal Reserve is the best place to be. The park has the largest volume of protected rainforest in the country. It is declared a Natural World Heritage Site, covering the South Eastern part of the country. With about 90% of the area still undisturbed and bordered naturally by the Dja river, the bio diversity and wide variety of primates from this reserve is worth a visit. You will find 5 threatened species and 107 mammal species when you arrive here.

The La Chefferie De Bafut, located near Bamenda, contains about 50 buildings. These buildings are terracotta structures with tiled roofs. There is a religious consideration in building these structures. The central structure known as Achum is architecturally and religiously most important. These sites tell the story of how this community evolved as a community and how unchanged they are, but never disregarding the fact, that they have their own beliefs. It gives a view of how mankind evolved in this part of the world. The people who live here belong to the Community of Baforchu.

The Rupestral Engravings of Bidzar, on the other hand, showcases a marble field with about 130 sq km of Cipolin outcrop. This is located on the road of Maroua Garoua. The flagstone comprises marble engravings of diagrammatic representations. The art that is depicted in this engraving are part of the tradition of Cameroon. This engraving, the geometric styles diagram, is believed to have been man made and some are as old as 300 years.

How about enjoying the strong running falls in Cameroon? The Falls of the Lobe is a nice place to see. This waterfall is 310 km from Yaounde. It features a whole set of small arms progressing into a series of smaller falls, some as high as 15 m and as broad as 100m, directly falling into the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Magnificent isn't it? You will also find along the series of falls a large number of tribes residing here. You can mingle with them and enjoy the rest of the landscape surrounding the majestic falls.

Another thrilling and exciting hot spot is Mount Cameroon. Mount Cameroon is located in the South west Province of Cameroon. It is an active volcanic mountain, and is the highest in the West and Central Africa. This is an extreme hot, (and I mean literally hot) spot, and supports the Montane tropical forest and about 150, 000 hectares of lowland.
