Scientists got known about these substances in the end of the 19th century, but only in the 20th century scientists managed to get more knowledge about them. The first successful experiment was carried out by the Russian physicists in 1923. They proved that semiconductors may be used to accelerate fluctuations. There was no possibility to develop some sophisticated devices as semiconductor assembly. First transistor was developed in Bell’s laboratory in 1949. That event influenced the quick improvement of semiconductor devices. The intense studying of the features of semiconductors was begun at the same time.

Induced emission is really a quite interesting characteristic of semiconductors that has been discovered for several tens of years. The first laser system was created with usage of semiconductors. The first version was based on p – n barriers, the latest ones – on heterojunction.

Nowadays we may see a great deal of various diodes which work with assistance of usage of semiconductors. Today it is not possible to carry out any researches without some modern technologies that are based on use of semiconductors.

The conductivity of semiconductors is situated in diapason between conductivity of metals and conductivity of isolators. They are germanium, selenium, silicon, etc.

It sounds a bit strange but scientists didn’t want to carry out researches of semiconductors for a long time. The first man that decided to get more knowledge about semiconductors was Abram Ioffe – soviet scientist. He discovered that semiconductors are the divided class of crystals with some unique characteristics. There are electron conduction and hole conduction developed by semiconductor devices. The features of semiconductor are dependant on the conditions they are placed. To get the features which are needed for the experiment or proper usage of device some admixtures are added to semiconductors.

Almost every area of modern technologies means use of semiconductors. Diodes, transistors and thyristors are the most frequently used devices. The broad application of semiconductors started not so long ago but today they are really broadly used. They are used to turn luminous and heat energy into electric energy and vice versa. Heat and cold can be produced by some kinds of semiconductors. Semiconductors perform the basic functions in many various devices: atomic batteries, quantum generators, processors and even primitive radio receivers. Engineers can’t do without semiconductor rectifiers, changers, power resistors and amplifiers. The usage of semiconductors instead of tube systems allows to lower the sizes and masses of electronic systems. The analogue systems are not equal if we talk about their reliability and power. Tube falls behind.

From day to day we can hear about some modern inventions that help humanity to have more conveniences or even save the life.

Such newest semiconductor systems as igct are broadly utilized nowadays. The history of pulsed power devices began in early 60’s when the American physicians produced the first system that worked on usage of some semiconductor matters.
