Video And Games Ratings

By: Jim Brown

All people of all ages enjoy a good video every now and then. The latest games have a lot of action and thrills in them but not every video or game on the market today is right for everyone in the family. This is why the movie industry has placed ratings on all games and all videos. Some video ratings are suitable for general audiences and others are risque enough to earn a restricted rating. Other videos and video games are suitable for pre-teens and require parental approval before viewing.

Parents are very aware of the rating system used for video games and home videos. They pay particular attention to the restricted ratings and make sure that those are not included in the selections that they bring home from the video rental store. Some video games are so graphically violent that parents must prohibit them from being played at home, especially if there are younger siblings at home.

The mature content rating for videos is usually hard to pinpoint, and the parent will generally have to view these movies and videos before their children do to make a determination on if they are suitable for viewing in the home by family members. Parents lose out on the popularity vote when they return some movies to the store but they have done their job of parenting and making difficult choices.

The reason for the movie industry using these ratings for the products that they make is that they want to provide wholesome entertainment to all members in a family. They certainly do not want to give children nightmares because the movie they rated as general audiences had too much ghoulish killings in them or monsters that frightened a child to the point where it caused mental distress.

These movie and video ratings are very helpful for most people that plan to purchase a movie or video games for home use. It will help parents make wise choices when they decide what material is right for each person in the family. It will also keep them from spending money on movies that will never been seen by certain family members. Ratings allow families to plan family movie nights that are fun and thrilling. Family nights are important moments that allow families to be close.

Some people organize their home video libraries by the ratings that are on the movie cases. Movies can be shared with friends in the neighborhood very quickly and easily and the parent will know that they are sharing something of value that their friends will find very enjoyable. Ratings allow parents to have choices and be in control of the quality of information that their family members are exposed to.
